Where to Elope in Montana – The 16 Most Beautiful Places

If you ask me, the best place to elope in Montana is in Flathead National Forest. This spot is just outside of national park grounds to the south and includes an epic ridge that looks like the Great Wall of China, a fire lookout tower you can stay in overnight, and lots of lakes and evergreen trees. Bonus, you get a fraction of the visitors from the park!

Even as a Colorado local, I have to admit, Montana has some serious contenders in terms of mountain beauty! When I first traveled to Glacier National Park years ago, I was blown away by how colorful, diverse, and wild it was. Even after over a decade photographing elopements all over the world, it’s hard not to be impressed with the natural landscapes here.

But if you want my favorite spots within Glacier or options in other portions of the state, keep reading! I have other great picks for your elopement day listed below.

Or, if you want to be led directly to locations with only your favorite types of scenery, you can click here to go to my searchable location database! This interactive map has filters specific to your wants and more than 900 spots to choose from.

Glacier National Park, Montana

A bride and groom stand by a serene lake with a towering mountain in the background. The bride wears a flowing white dress and veil, while the groom is in a dark suit. The landscape is lush with green trees under a clear blue sky.

If you are looking for the perfect place to have a mix of gorgeous scenery and lots of wildlife– look no further. This park is extremely popular for good reason– it is a colorful, unique, mountain-filled, wildlife-overflowing, magical place. Don’t let the popularity scare you though– there are still plenty of places to find some peace and quiet and take in the views.

Best for: Wildflowers, Glaciers, Lakes, Mountains

Best months to get married here:
July to October

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking, Camping

Flathead National Forest, Montana

A bride and groom stand on logs by a mountain lake, surrounded by rugged terrain and jagged peaks. The calm water reflects the mountainous landscape, and the bride's flowing dress contrasts with the natural scenery.

Flathead doesn’t get the crowds that Glacier does, which honestly makes it kind of perfect. You’ve got the same unreal mountain views, glorious, glittering lakes, and forested trails, all without the need to jostle for space. You can even rent a historic fire lookout tower to stay in for your elopement night, which comes with 360-degree views and serious once-in-a-lifetime energy. In summer, swing by Flathead Lake for kayaking or berry-picking (yum!), or take a backpacking trip out to the stone spine of the Chinese Wall. Visiting in winter is also fabulous, with enough skiing and snowshoeing options to keep you busy for days just outside the park lines.

Best for: Lakes, Mountains, Forest

Best months to get married here:
June to September

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking, Boating, Paddleboarding

Lake McDonald, Glacier National Park, Montana

The calm, clear Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park, Montana, reflecting surrounding snow-capped mountains under a bright blue sky. The lake's shoreline is lined with colorful, smooth pebbles. Forested mountainsides flank both sides of the lake, creating a serene and picturesque landscape.

This is the lake you’ve probably seen in those Glacier National Park photos – it’s the one with the rainbow-colored rocks under the water and mountains rising up in the background. And yes, it’s just as cool in real life. You can stay at the old-school lodge right on the lake (built in 1913!) and spend your elopement day hiking, waterfall-chasing, or cruising the scenic Going-to-the-Sun Road. Bonus: sunrise and sunset on the lake are stupid pretty. Especially if you’re paddling out onto the water in a canoe with just you two and the mountain reflections

Best for: Forest, Mountains, Waterfall, Lake, Rainbow colored rocks!

June to September

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking, Paddleboarding, Camping

Flathead Lake, Montana

A serene landscape with a clear blue lake reflecting the cloudy sky and distant snow-capped mountains under the horizon. The foreground shows vibrant, lush greenery beneath the water's surface, adding depth to the tranquil scene.

Flathead Lake isn’t just the biggest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi – it also ranks among one of my favorites in Montana, showing off incredibly clear water and ringed with mountain views in almost every direction. This is a great choice if you want a lakeside ceremony with easy access to cute towns (like Bigfork or Polson) and lots of places to stay. Take a private boat out onto the lake or snag a spot at Wayfarers State Park for shoreline views that pop at golden hour. And yes, there’s even a local legend of a sea monster here – not quite the Loch Ness Monster, but maybe her cousin?

Best for: Forest, Mountains, Lake

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking, Boating, Paddleboarding, Camping

Logan Pass, Glacier National Park, Montana

A bride and groom walk hand in hand up a wooden path in a mountain meadow. The bride wears a flowing white dress, and the groom carries an orange backpack. A majestic mountain rises in the background under a partly cloudy sky.

Logan Pass is a great elopement spot because it gives you incredible alpine climate scenery while still being reachable by car, right off Going-to-the-Sun Road at its highest point. The pass is only open during the summer months due to its elevation, but picking a spot here in June or July will also give you access to stunning fields of wildflowers all around. Get here first thing in the morning to snag a parking spot and avoid crowds.

Best for: Mountains, Wildflowers

Best months to get married here:
June to August

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking

Big Sky, Montana

Snow-capped mountains rise in the background beneath a blue sky with scattered clouds, while dense green pine forests and grassy slopes fill the foreground and middle ground.

Big Sky isn’t just a name – it’s the whole vibe. Wide open spaces, massive views, and the kind of quiet that makes everything feel more magical. You’ve got Yellowstone National Park an hour south, Lone Mountain towering above town, and a killer combo of luxe lodges and rustic hideaways to choose from. In summer, it’s all about wildflowers bursting in every shade of pastel and winding hiking trails; in winter, world-class skiing. But no matter the season, Big Sky is the kind of place where you can say “I do” on a mountaintop and feel like the only people on Earth.

Best for: Mountains, Wildflowers

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking

Glacier Lake, Flathead National Forest, Montana

A couple stands on a large rock by a mountain lake, exchanging vows with an officiant. The bride wears a white dress and veil, holding a bouquet, while the groom is in a dark suit. Scenic mountains and trees frame the clear, sunny day.

Tucked away in the Swan Range, Glacier Lake is one of those places that doesn’t make the top 10 lists – and that’s exactly why you should go. It’s a hike-in kind of spot (about 5 miles round trip), so it’s quiet, remote, and totally worth the leg burn. Once you’re there, it’s just you, a glassy alpine lake, and views of craggy peaks towering over the treeline. Bring a picnic, dip your toes in the snowmelt water, and enjoy total peace and quiet. Ahhhh… For couples who want their elopement to feel like pure escapism, this place delivers.

Best for: Mountains, Forest, Lakes

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking

Bozeman, Montana

A scenic landscape shows a snow-dusted field with a winding path leading towards a forest of evergreen trees. Beyond the trees, snow-covered mountains are bathed in the warm glow of a rising sun, with a partly cloudy sky overhead in Bozeman, Montana.

If you’re seeking Rocky Mountain landscapes for your elopement with great skiing and incredibly cool small-town vibes, Bozeman should make it to your shortlist. This would be a great place to see in the winter given the abundance of great cold weather options here! Soak in the hot springs, ski or snowboard in Bridger Bowl, or explore the history of the area at the Museum of the Rockies.

Best for: Mountains, Forest, Hot Spring, City

Best months to get married here:
June to September

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking

St Marys Lake, Glacier National Park, Montana

A couple stands on a rocky ledge by a serene lake with mountainous scenery. The woman, in a flowing white gown, holds the hand of the man, dressed in a suit. The sky is partly cloudy, casting gentle light on the landscape.

If Lake McDonald is Glacier’s most famous lake, St. Mary is its moodier, more dramatic alternative. Here, you’ll find sky-high mountaintops reflected in still water, and more than a few wide-open spaces to play with. It’s tucked into the east side of the park, which gets less traffic but just as many big mountains to spot. Wild Goose Island is a tiny speck in the middle of the lake that makes for a ridiculously photogenic backdrop, and the surrounding trails are full of wildflower-scattered meadows and secret waterfalls. For that wild Glacier feeling without the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, start here.

Best for: Mountains, Wildflowers, Forest, Lake

Best months to get married here:
May to September

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking, Boating, Kayaking, Camping

Custer Gallatin National Forest, Montana

A scenic landscape showcases rugged rocky cliffs with scattered trees and patches of greenery, set against a clear blue sky with a few white clouds. The foreground features a grassy meadow with more trees dotting the hillside in Custer Gallatin National Forest, Montana.

Custer Gallatin National Forest is just north of Yellowstone over the state line in Montana. This is a perfect way to elope in scenery that feels like the park without having the crowds. There are tons of gems in this area to make your wedding day feel super special, like hot springs resorts, scenic byways, Grasshopper Glacier, and cabins for rent through the Forest Service. It effectively connects Yellowstone with towns like Bozeman, making it a great stop if you’re in the area on a multi-day elopement.

Best for: Forest

Best months to get married here:
June to September

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking

Missoula, Montana

A scenic landscape featuring a winding river flowing through a lush valley surrounded by forested hills and mountains in Missoula, Montana. The view is framed by tall evergreen trees, with patches of sunlight illuminating the valley and distant peaks under a partly cloudy sky.

Missoula is a perfect blend of trendy, university town and western history in Big Sky Land. Eloping here will find you hiking the M, soaking in seemingly countless hot springs in the area, or hopping between food trucks and breweries. The town is nestled in a valley literally surrounded by mountains, the closest of which is Mt. Jumbo, giving you easy access to wide open fields and great hiking trails not far at all from the town. If you’re looking to include skiing and snowboarding in your elopement, the number of mountains means that there are some really great opportunities to do just that. The vibe here is fiercely independent with a ton of unique activities that will make your wedding day stand out in your memory.

Best for: Mountains, Hot Springs, City

Best months to get married here:
June to September

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking

Lolo National Forest, Montana

Lolo is lowkey one of the most diverse forests in the state. It stretches from high alpine basins in the Bitterroots to mossy cedar groves near the Idaho border. This place smells like adventure, with the oh-so-addictive scents of pine, rain, and campfire in the air. Check out places like Rattlesnake National Recreation Area if you want to be close to Missoula, or push deeper into the forest for total seclusion. There are hot springs hidden in the woods, lookout towers you can rent overnight, and even wild huckleberry patches in late summer. If your elopement vibe is cozy, woodsy, and a little bit rugged, this forest delivers.

Best for: River, Mountain, Forest

Best months to get married here:
June to September

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking

Whitefish Lake State Park, Montana

If you want lake views without going full remote, this spot is a win. Just outside Whitefish town, this park has everything you need to keep things simple: there’s a beach, a boat launch, and even paddleboard rentals in summer – perfect if you want a laid-back, barefoot ceremony followed by a paddle session. In fall, the colors here are wild, and in winter, it turns into a snow-covered dream. Bonus: You can camp right inside the park or head into town for cute cabins and local breweries after the vows.

Best for: Mountains, Forest, City, Lake

Best months to get married here:
June to September

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking, Boating, Kayaking, Camping

Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest, Montana

A serene river flows through a canyon with steep, rocky cliffs on both sides. Pine trees cover the slopes, and a clear blue sky with a few clouds is above.

This forest is huge – like 2.8 million acres huge – and sprawls across everything from prairie to dizzying peaks. You’ve got spots like the Big Belt Mountains and the Elkhorns offering easy-to-access ridgelines, plus spots like Crystal Lake tucked into remote corners. One of the coolest features of this spot is that you can say your vows with views of the Missouri River Breaks, where the cliffs drop down dramatically into the river below. The forest also overlaps with sections of the original Lewis and Clark expedition route from 1804, which adds a pretty epic layer of history to your day. Eloping here feels like finding your own private slice of old-school Montana.

Best for: River, Forest, Mountains, Lakes

Best months to get married here:
June to September

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking

Whitefish, Montana

A picturesque winter scene featuring a snow-covered village with wooden houses surrounding a tranquil lake. Snow-laden trees and mountains in the background create a serene atmosphere under a clear blue sky.

Whitefish is that rare mountain town that’s cool without trying too hard. You’ve got breweries, bakeries, a super cute main street, and actual good coffee (trust me, not always a given). In the winter, it’s a ski town. In the summer, it’s all about the lake, the hiking trails, and the never-ending sunset light. Eloping here gives you options – mountain-top vows, paddleboard photos, forest hikes, and a celebratory dinner downtown, all in one go. It’s relaxed, friendly, and absolutely stunning, in a low-key way of course.

Best for: Mountains, Lake, City

Best months to get married here:
June to September

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking, Boating, Skiing

Kootenai National Forest, Montana

A serene river flows through a rocky canyon surrounded by lush green pine trees under a blue sky with scattered clouds. Hills covered with dense forest rise on both sides. The scene conveys a tranquil, natural beauty.

Way up in the northwest corner of Montana, Kootenai is all about dramatic cliffs, river gorges, and towering old-growth forests. It’s home to the Cabinet Mountains, which feel remote and wild in all the best ways. This is where you’ll find Kootenai Falls – a wow-worthy waterfall with a swinging footbridge that gives you an epic elopement photo op. Or head up to the Ten Lakes Scenic Area for lakes and ridgeline trails that look like they were plucked from Switzerland. Not a lot of people make it out this far… which makes it feel all the more magical.

Best for: River, Mountains, Forest

This stretch of the Rocky Mountain Region includes lower peaks than its southern counterparts in Colorado, but just as many beautiful jagged peaks, wide fields full of wildlife, stunning glaciers, and peaceful lakes.
