Where To Elope in the Faroe Islands: The Top 12 Best Places

The Faroe Islands are one of my top 25 favorite places in the WORLD for an elopement. I was already an avid lover of both Scotland and Iceland when I traveled here, and somehow, it managed to feel like both of them combined—with way less people than either of them. Every corner looks like it was ripped straight from a fairytale.

It’s hard to pick a favorite, but the best place to elope in the Faroes overall is Kalsoy Island, which is dominated by a giant green ridge that makes for insanely beautiful (and easy!) hikes on your wedding day.

A couple stands hand in hand on a grassy field with rocky terrain, wearing dark formal attire. Behind them, towering cliffs and a sharply pointed rock formation stretch toward a cloudy sky. Puddles of water dot the foreground, reflecting parts of the landscape in Tindhólmur, Faroe Islands.

From private island excursions to having puffins outnumber your wedding party, I have many more favorite spots in the Faroes that you can consider for your elopement day! Keep reading for more of my picks!

Fossa Waterfall, Faroe Islands

A couple in wedding attire walks hand-in-hand up a grassy hillside towards the Fossa Waterfall in the Faroe Islands. The bride wears a white gown while the groom dons a dark suit. The landscape features rocky terrain and sunlight filtering through clouds, illuminating the scene.

As the highest waterfall in the Faroe Islands, Fossá is a gorgeous dual-tiered cascade of white water rushing against black rock and green hills. This is just a 45-minute drive away from the capital of Tórshavn, which makes it a great pick for folks who want to elope in the Faroes and get those epic landscapes without having to go far. While you can get very close to this waterfall, you will get pretty soaked. This is a good stop for the end of the day or from afar! Or pack dry clothes and make playing the point of it.

Best for: Coast, Islands, Mountains, Waterfall

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking

Mykines Island, Faroe Islands

A bride and groom embrace on a grassy hillside with a dramatic green mountain and the ocean in the background, under a cloudy sky.

I feel like I only need one word to win you over when it comes to Mykines: puffins. Come in the middle of summer and you will see—no joke—THOUSANDS of them perching on the cliffs. Think of them as your little tuxedo-clad wedding guests. And of course, you also have all of the best parts of the landscapes in the Faroes with bright green hills and ridges and sheer cliff faces.

Best for: Coast, Island, Mountains, Puffins

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking, Boating

Saksun / Ut á Lónna, Faroe Islands

A couple dressed in dark, formal clothing holds hands while walking on a rocky path, with grass-covered mountains and a lake in the background under a partly cloudy sky.

This is a great black sand beach that has a short hike down to it on well-kept paths. Not only is the destination beautiful, this is a great time to grab shots during your day of you walking through the gorgeous scenery or against the backdrop of the green hills that lead down to the beach. The beach leads to a small inlet from the sea, surrounding you with dramatic, tall cliffs. This is the best of the Faroes in one location! If you need to choose one spot for a little taste of everything, this is a great pick.

Best for: Mountains, Fjord, Black Sand Beach

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking

Tórshavn, Faroe Islands

A couple stands in front of a dark wooden house with grass on its roof. The woman in a flowing white dress touches the shoulder of the man in a pink suit. They stand on a grassy lawn with a harbor and blue sky in the background.

Tiny, colorful, and completely underrated, Tórshavn is the capital, but it feels more like a cozy fishing village with its turf-roof houses and harbor full of bobbing boats. It’s a great home base for your elopement if you want some comfort (boutique hotels, wine bars, and seriously good Nordic food) with easy day trips to all the big nature moments. I love it as a start-or-end point for a Faroe elopement. It adds just the right amount of culture, cuteness, and good coffee before or after all your wild landscape adventures.

Best for: Coast, City

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking, Boating

Múlafossur Waterfall, Vagar, Faroe Islands

This is the waterfall shot you’ve probably seen on Instagram, but it looks just as mind-blowing in real life! Múlafossur pours straight off a cliff into the sea, with the tiny turf-roofed village of Gásadalur perched just above it. It feels wildly remote but is actually just a short drive from the airport (even the most untamed spots here are weirdly accessible). If you’re into dramatic cliffs, moody skies, and the kind of silence that makes you whisper, this spot is pure elopement goals. Just pack waterproof everything: the weather changes by the hour!

Best for: Coast, Mountains, Waterfall

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking, Boating

Kalsoy Island, Faroe Islands

A winding path leads to a small lighthouse perched on a green, grassy hilltop. Behind it rises a tall, sharp cliff overlooking the calm ocean. The sky is cloudy, casting a slightly moody atmosphere over the dramatic landscape on Kalsoy Island, Faroe Islands.

Kalsoy Island is best known for the Kallur Lighthouse, but it’s not the building that will command your attention. You’ll be busy being absorbed by the striking green ridge that seems to rise directly out of the sea. Just behind the lighthouse, the dramatic cliff that makes up the northernmost tip of the island provides a super dramatic backdrop. When the sun hits this ridge, the colors are dramatic and to die for… but it’s equally beautiful in the fog and clouds, when the landscape feels otherworldly.

Best for: Mountains, Cliffs, Coast, Island

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking, Boating

Drangarnir, Faroe Islands

A bride and groom, wearing a white lace dress and a black suit, stand on a boat looking toward a massive, arch-shaped rock formation rising from the sea under a cloudy sky. Numerous birds fly around the rock.

Drangarnir is a natural sea arch that’s only accessible by boat or a guided hike. Definitely not a quick pit-stop situation – but that’s what makes it feel so special. The hike itself is long and windswept with wild views the whole way, or you can sail in for an elopement that’s all about sea spray and seclusion. Either way, the arch rising out of the ocean is one of the most iconic sights in the Faroes, and saying your vows near it is a story you’ll be telling forever.

Best for: Coast, Islands, Sea Arch

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking, Boating

Gjogv, Faroe Islands

A bride with pink hair and glasses in a white wedding dress stands outdoors in front of dark wooden houses with white windows on a cloudy day.

It’s wrong to have favourites, but… The little village of Gjógv (pronounced roughly like “gee-oh-g”) is a serious contender. It’s all colorful houses, rolling hills, and a dramatic sea-filled gorge that cuts through the cliffs. There’s even a natural amphitheatre down by the water that makes the perfect low-key ceremony spot. Bonus: you can stay overnight at the cozy guesthouse in town, where the locals might tell you stories about the sea, the sheep, or both. It’s charming in that low-effort way that makes everything feel easy and intimate.

Best for: Mountains, Coast, the village!

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking

Lake Sorvagsvatn, Faroe Islands

Dramatic landscape of Sørvágsvatn in the Faroe Islands, where the lake appears to flow into the ocean from atop high sea cliffs. The cloudy sky adds a moody atmosphere, contrasting with the green grass and brown rocky terrain.

If you’re a Faroe fan, you might have already seen the optical illusion photo – the one where the lake looks like it’s floating high above the ocean. That’s Sørvágsvatn. In reality, it’s all about perspective, but the real-life version is still completely surreal. Hike along the clifftop to get that famous view (it’s a bit of a trek but not too over-the-top), or find a quiet spot by the lakeside for a more tucked-away moment. It’s got everything: cliffs, water, wide open space, and serious wow-factor. Great for couples who want something unique but still pretty accessible.

Best for: Coast, Cliffs, Lake

Best months to get married here:

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking

Kallur Lighthouse, Faroe Islands

A couple in formal attire holds hands and dances on a grassy hillside. The scene is blurred, creating a sense of motion. In the background, a small lighthouse is visible at the top of the hill under an overcast sky.

This one is for the drama lovers. Perched right on the edge of Kalsoy Island, Kallur Lighthouse sits at the tip of a grassy ridge with sheer drops on either side and endless ocean beyond. Getting there requires a ferry ride, a drive through tunnels that feel like cave systems, and then a steep but doable hike, but trust me, so worth it. It makes you feel like you’re at the edge of the world! Just imagine eloping here with the wind in your hair, puffins overhead, and those moody Faroese clouds doing their thing.

Best for: Island, Cliffs, Mountains, Sheep, the Lighthouse

Best months to get married here:
June to August

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking

Slættaratindur, Faroe Islands

Mountainous landscape with rocky peaks, green and yellow slopes, scattered patches of snow, and low clouds drifting through valleys under a blue sky with wispy clouds. A distant coastline is visible beyond the mountains.

This is the tallest mountain in the Faroe Islands – and while it sounds intense, the hike up Slættaratindur is surprisingly manageable if you’re game for a bit of uphill. The summit dishes out 360° views of what feels like every single island in the archipelago, all dramatic ridgelines and ocean stretching in every direction. On a clear day, you’ll feel like you’re standing on top of the entire North Atlantic.

Best for: Mountains, Coast, Islands

Best months to get married here:
June to September

My favorite activities to do here: Hiking

Gásadalur, Faroe Islands

Gásadalur is one of those villages that feels frozen in time. It’s tiny (like, fewer-than-20-residents tiny) and tucked into a bowl of steep green mountains, with ocean views and a road that only arrived in the early 2000s. It’s also where you’ll find the iconic Múlafossur Waterfall right below. Bring boots, embrace the mist, and consider staying in a local guesthouse nearby. It’s all about slowing down and soaking it up here!

Best for: Mountains, Coast, Waterfall, Cabins
