In the southwest corner of British Columbia floats In the southwest corner of British Columbia floats the enchanted world of Vancouver Island. From tip to tail this island courses with terrain mild and wild, sophisticated and rugged. At every turn there’s a feast for all five senses.

Which is to say–it’s perfect.

Which is to wonder–what about eloping here?

Picture, if you will, awaking in your cozy beachside lodge to the crash of Pacific waves. Close your eyes and listen to the sound of each swell brimming, swimming in your direction. Breathe in that salty spirit. Relish the feeling of being at the very beginning of something wonderful.

Picture, now, securing your headset as the private helicopter takes flight. Up and up you climb, the trees shrinking into evergreen splotches. Out the bugeye window a puzzle lays below, each small subisland fitting in precisely with the divots and cusps of the sound. And is that… maybe… yes, a great gray whale breaching the water’s glassy surface.

Picture your stomach dropping–the good kind–as you descend to the center of a brilliant snowfield, hopping out to traipse ankle-deep through the next bit of wonderful. The scene is layered more beautifully than the most delicate wedding cake. On top, painted mountain peaks; central layers of glacial pools and tundra flowers; the base, that lovely dancing ocean sound. All of this, here for you to taste.

Picture a centuries old forest, laced with dense spruce, hemlock, and cedar. Moving through the luscious mosses and ferns, how easy it is to become overwhelmed with gratitude. These wooded alleys store life in their branches, love in their tendrils, and are so gracious to share a bit of it with you on this day, of all magical days.

Picture, at last, a finale. The savoring of a beachside bike ride to a secluded rocky cove, goosebumps raising as the sun lowers. You lay your picnic blanket down on a bed of washed up sea kelp, treated to a full view of the beaching sea otters.

Which is to conclude–it cannot get better than this.

So… Vancouver Island, then? Sweet, meet you there.

When Gary invited Sheila over for their first neig When Gary invited Sheila over for their first neighborly dinner, she was a bit worried. The dinner would be on Sweetest Day–what on earth would she bring to celebrate? Gary’s worry was equally troubling… was he supposed to know what Sweetest Day is?

Luckily for the both of them, the night flowed so sweetly that their worries disappeared. Sheila brought over candy and taught Gary about the Hallmark holiday meant to share romance and acts of kindness.

They were smitten from the get.

The next seven years were filled with ever more learning, sugar, and charm. From Gary’s wall of instruments, Sheila took quickly to the ukulele. With Sheila’s knack for design, they soon built a new home together. They traveled far and wide, hiked high and low, and fell deeper into their love with each passing hour.

Until finally, a new Sweetest Day was upon them—their elopement day.

They’d known for quite some time that forever was on their horizon, it just took a little while to get it on the books. So with the spontaneity held by the lightest of hearts, they said why not now?

Piling in the car and heading west, they picked picturesque Colorado for their adventure. Sheila crafted her own dress, arranged her own flowers, and filled her own backpack precisely how she wanted. Gary grabbed the ukulele in one arm and Sheila’s hand in the other.

Onward. Together.

The sounds of nature they both hold so dear showed up with gusto to join in their joy. The bearded mountain goats cheered from the cliffs above. Scuttling pica meeped congratulations as the champagne bubbles surged.

Gary serenaded Sheila on the lakeshore, the cherished quietude filled only with his gentle strums. With the sun approaching its final moments for the day, she joined him in their first dance. Gary planted kiss upon kiss on Sheila’s ringed hand, his adoration endless. A twirl… just one more… before heading back down the trail.

Onward. Together.

Sheila and Gary–may your lives be one Sweetest Day after another.
