How to Plan a Delicate Arch Wedding

Delicate Arch is iconic—when people think of Utah and its unique landscape, an image of that dramatic arch is what they conjure up in their minds. At 52 feet tall, Delicate Arch is the largest freestanding arch in Arches National Park and the most identifiable. It is simple yet monumental, which makes it a beautifully effective spot for weddings that are meant to feel effortlessly timeless.

For over a decade, I have been photographing elopements and weddings, yet I never get sick of Delicate Arch. Every visit leaves me as breathless as the first time I saw it and I love sharing that experience with couples—capturing that moment that I know will stay with them forever. If this sounds like something you’re interested in, then keep reading for my best insider tips on how to plan a stunning Delicate Arch wedding.

Frequently asked questions about getting married at Delicate Arch:

How do you get married at Delicate Arch?

Delicate Arch is, arguably, the most popular spot in Arches to visit and one of the most recognizable, thanks to its presence on Utah license plates, U.S. postage stamps, etc.—it was even featured in the 2002 Winter Olympics when torch bearers passed directly beneath it during the Opening Ceremony! Dramatic, iconic, and breathtaking, Delicate Arch is the perfect backdrop for an epic wedding, so here is a crash course in what you’ll need to know to plan one:

  1. Pick a Date

Arches National Park typically only allows one ceremony per day per designated site, so slots can go pretty fast. Because of that, I recommend booking a year in advance in order to secure your date!

Pro Tip: Applications for permits (see Step 3 for more details) open a year out from whatever date you’re looking at (i.e. if you want to get married June 4th in 2027, you can apply for your permit starting June 4th, 2026).

  1. Finalize Your Guest Count

Ceremonies at Delicate Arch are capped at 10 people—this number includes both of you, your photographer, officiant, guests, and any vendors. There is no maximum number of vehicles allowed per group, but parking is restricted to your selected site which could make it limited, so I strongly recommend carpooling to make things easier!

  1. Get a Permit & Marriage License

In order to get married in Arches National Park, you’ll need a Special Use Permit and a Utah marriage license.

To get the permit, you’ll need to visit the Arches National Park Weddings & Commitment Ceremonies webpage and download/fill in the application form (which I’ve linked here for your convenience!), then head over to Pay.gov where you’ll pay the $185 permit fee. Once you receive confirmation of your payment, just email that alongside your permit application to SEUG_CommercialServices@nps.gov, and you should be good to go!

As for the marriage license, you can get one from the county clerk’s office closest to the park, which would be the Grand County Clerk’s Office. You’ll need to download an application from their official website, then bring it to your in-person appointment at the Clerk’s Office. The license will cost you $50 and you do need to provide an authorized officiant along with your application. If you want someone who is not ordained, you can have them designated by the Clerk for your ceremony, they’ll just need to fill in the Single Ceremony Designee Form, and join your appointment at the Clerk’s Office.

Pro Tip: Permit applications can take weeks to process, so I strongly suggest applying sooner rather than later so there’s no concern about having a permit in time for your ceremony!

  1. Plan the Day & Pick Your Photo Locations

A great thing about the Special Use Permit is that it allows you to take photos anywhere in the park before & after your ceremony! A pro elopement photographer (like me!) who is familiar with the park can help you plan your day as well as guide you to the perfect spots with the best lighting and most stunning views for your ideal wedding portraits.

  1. Get Married!

That’s it—all you have left to do is exchange your vows under the iconic Delicate Arch and enjoy your epic adventure at Arches National Park!

Pro Tip: Make sure to send copies of your permit to everyone in your group and bring a printed one to the ceremony, just in case!

When’s the best time to visit Delicate Arch?

While Arches National Park is open year-round, spring and fall are the best times to visit! As the shoulder seasons, those two time periods offer the best combination of lighter crowds and comfortable temperatures that make it easier to enjoy your experience in the park.

Even during those quieter months though, I recommend visiting on a weekday, around sunrise or sunset if possible. That’s when you’ll get the beautiful, soft light that makes Delicate Arch glow against the vast desert landscape behind it, offering a breathtaking backdrop for your ceremony and wedding photos!

How do you get to Delicate Arch?

There are actually three sites associated with Delicate Arch: Lower Delicate Arch Viewpoint, Upper Delicate Arch Viewpoint, and the arch itself.

To get to the actual arch, you’ll enter the Park through the Arches National Park Entrance Station located at 38°36’59.6″N 109°37’10.1″W. From there, take Arches Nat’l Pk Rd (also labeled as Arches Scenic Dr on some navigation apps) for 11.6 miles, then turn right onto Delicate Arch Rd. After about a mile, turn left into the Wolfe Ranch parking lot located at 38°44’08.7″N 109°31’15.5″W, where you’ll find the trailhead for the Delicate Arch Trail which will take you right up to the arch!

If you want to instead visit the Delicate Arch viewpoints—which give you a view of the arch from about a mile out—then, instead of turning left into the Wolfe Ranch parking lot, you’ll just keep going down Delicate Arch Rd until the end. There, you’ll find an open-air parking lot located at 38°44’01.9″N 109°30’08.3″W, which is at the base of the Upper Delicate Arch Viewpoint Trail. From there, you can either take the trail to the Upper Viewpoint or walk to the Lower Viewpoint which is right next to the parking lot!

How long is the walk to get to Delicate Arch?

The walk to Delicate Arch depends on whether you’re visiting one of the arch’s viewpoints or the arch itself. To reach the Lower Delicate Arch Viewpoint (located at 38°44’01.9″N 109°30’08.3″W), you’ll park in the open-air lot I mentioned above and take the path to the right of the Upper Delicate Arch Viewpoint trailhead until you reach the overlook. The walkway is paved and only about 100 yards long, so a very accessible way to view the arch from a distance.

If you take a left at the trailhead, you’ll be starting the Upper Delicate Arch Viewpoint Trail, which is about 2 miles roundtrip and considered a fairly easy hike. At the end, you’ll be rewarded with a closer view of Delicate Arch and stunning views of the park!

To go straight to the arch, you’ll instead take the Delicate Arch Trail, which begins by the Wolfe Ranch parking lot I mentioned above. The trek is about 6 miles roundtrip and is considered to be a moderate hike with a 629 ft. gain, so a little more challenging than the Upper Delicate Arch Viewpoint Trail, but definitely worth the effort since it gets you so close to the arch and offers epic views of the Utah landscape along the way.

How much does it cost to get married at Delicate Arch?

Getting married at any of the wedding sites in Arches National Park will cost about $265. This includes the Special Use Permit fee ($185), the Utah marriage license from a local county clerk ($50), and the park’s Standard Entrance Pass for a vehicle ($30). If you have more cars, each one will have to pay the $30 entrance fee—I strongly suggest purchasing your pass online ahead of time, which you can do on the park’s official website here.

Beyond those costs, your total elopement/wedding budget is completely up to you! It usually depends on your guest count, vendors, travel plans, etc., but the couples who hire me tend to prioritize the experience of having an adventure, which is why they often invest most of their budget in photography to capture every incredible moment of it.

If you want to know more, feel free to check out my full cost of eloping guide here!

Are dogs allowed at Delicate Arch?

Dogs are not allowed at Delicate Arch or on any of the trails around the park, but they are allowed on established roads/parking areas and in established campgrounds/picnic areas as long as they’re leashed!

Delicate Arch Elopement & Wedding Photos

Holly & Zach’s Delicate Arch Fall Wedding

One look at Holly & Zach and you’ll understand why a normal wedding venue was just never going to be cool enough for them.

Holly & Zach eloped because they wanted to feel like they were doing something true to themselves as well as saving these super special moments just for themselves instead of having to share them with over 100 people.

They really wanted a blend of style and natural posing. To feel totally connected to and stand out in the landscape. And I think they nailed it.

Holly & Zach woke up at sunrise to get an early start to the trail and sneak in a few star photos along the way. They got ready at Delicate Arch itself and did a first look completely surrounded by red rocks and canyons. Then, at sunrise, they went to go say their vows underneath the arch.

I always encourage folks looking to do something like this to go early, on a weekday, and during a shoulder season—which is exactly what Holly & Zach did! And as a result, they had the whole arch completely to themselves.

They explored more arches and overlooks in the area after that but getting to say their vows under this super recognizable arch was such a stand-out moment.
