For the couple that spent 15+ years getting to this moment, nothing but the best that the Centennial State has to offer.

One of the best parts about Colorado is that, no matter how much you’ve seen, there’s always a new corner to explore.

Why They Eloped

Alex & Josh had known each other since the 6th grade and were friends for 15 years before they started dating—meaning their story was decades in the making, and no big wedding was ever going to come close to being meaningful enough to be the ceremony they deserved.

They were also experienced travelers who had overcome the emotional toll of doing long distance for over a year and a half. When it came to their wedding, they didn’t want any stress. They just wanted easy, romantic, bohemian vibes in a beautiful location with their closest friends. Something that celebrated everything that they had conquered and let them just relax and enjoy the moment and feel truly present.

What They Wanted – Their Vision

These two were Colorado enthusiasts, so they’d seen and done a lot in the state! Between Josh having lived in Denver, a proposal at Hanging Lake, and lots of hiking treks across all the beautiful mountain ranges in Colorado, they let me know that they had already seen a lot… but were also super open and excited to explore new spots in this state that is so special to both of them.

They told me…

  • They love hiking, but didn’t want to do anything strenuous that day
  • They were set on bringing their best friends with them and had a private dinner planned with them after
  • That Alex was really jazzed about the idea of a floral arch on the mountain
  • They were hoping for some guidance & opinions about great spots—they just wanted somewhere stunning

Initially, Alex had spotted an intimate wedding venue in Aspen that she adored, but the price she was quoted was out of this world, leaving them without a clear direction to go in. With a state so crazy big and beautiful, picking a spot can quickly get overwhelming without help… even more so when factoring in how to get to said spot, how to avoid crowds, and when to go for the best lighting.

This is where my Colorado born-and-raised planning comes in clutch.

How I Designed Their Experience

Whenever I hear “we don’t want a crazy hike” combined with “we LOVE Colorado mountains”, my mind immediately goes to a 4X4. Having grown up in this state, I know that there are dozens of truly epic off-road trails that will put you in the heart of some of the best mountain views, minus the hiking requirements. (Fun fact: most of these came from the Gold Rush. Thanks, history class.)

I especially love this solution for intimate weddings that have a few guests, like they did, since it gives everyone the chance to ride up together regardless of hiking preferences while relaxing and enjoying the scenery.

I pitched this to Alex & Josh via email during the planning process despite them not having previously mentioned 4X4’s because I knew how perfect it would be for them as a way to get everything they wanted. After hearing my thoughts on what specific spots this would give us access to, they were all in!

When I crafted a location list for them, I gave them not only all my favorite secret 4×4 trails, but also a shortlist of ones that I thought would specifically work great for Alex’s floral arch, which she was contracting through my favorite floral vendor at my recommendation. When the time was coming to nail down a specific location, I went out to the pass I was considering and scouted a specific spot for them in person, just to make sure it truly had everything they were looking for. Later on, I’d pick up the floral team to take with me back to this exact location for Alex & Josh’s wedding day!

A perfect location on public land near Aspen that matched the views and vibes of that venue Alex had had her eye on without the exorbitant fee, up on a ridge that I knew looked to the west and would be insanely beautiful at sunset. All just a half a mile walk from the car while still feeling secluded & private.

Their Elopement Story

Alex & Josh rented a condo in downtown Aspen that served as their homebase during their elopement, which was where we started the day, taking photos as they got ready. Alex’s outfit included this absolutely gorgeous flower crown that matched the florals in her bouquet and arch installation—beautiful dark greenery, white accents, and lots of blush colored blooms.

We went up the mountain into the pass and did their first look with just the two of them, giving them a second together to laugh and catch their breath before rejoining the rest of their party for the ceremony.

A bride in a white dress with flower crown gently touches a groom's shoulder. They stand on a grassy hill with a mountain in the background under a clear sky, creating a serene and romantic scene.
A bride in a lacy, backless gown and a groom in a blue suit stand on a grassy mountaintop exchanging vows. The bride wears a floral hairpiece, and the backdrop features expansive, rugged mountains under a clear blue sky.
A bride and groom share a kiss in a scenic landscape with towering mountains in the background. The bride is in a white dress and the groom in a suit under a moody sky.

Unique Elopement Idea: Friends Only Ceremony

Alex & Josh chose to have guests at their wedding, but chose to only bring their best friends along! This led to such incredible vibes the entire time. I love this as a way to have folks in your life there to celebrate you day-of, but minus the extensive guest list and drama that can sometimes come with inviting family. Chosen family is always valid when it comes to eloping. There’s no “right” answer about who (if anyone) should be there!

The wedding party hiked up that little half a mile to the pass where the floral arch had been installed, and they said their vows with one of their closest friends as an officiant. When I tell you… everybody was crying. There was so much love on this mountain top—for each other, of course, and love from their dearest friends all there to cheer them on and celebrate them. Their ceremony was so beautiful in the golden hour light with the valley sprawled out behind them. It was genuinely so moving.

A couple embraces at their outdoor wedding ceremony. The bride wears a floral crown and white lace gown, while the groom is in a suit. They're surrounded by floral arrangements with a mountainous landscape in the background. An officiant stands nearby.
A bride and groom are exchanging vows outdoors. The bride, wearing a floral crown, reads from a notebook. The groom, in a suit, laughs joyfully. A man stands behind them smiling, with a mountain backdrop and floral decorations surrounding the scene.
A group of seven people, including a bride and groom, pose together outdoors on a grassy hill with mountains in the background. The bride wears a white dress and floral crown, while others are dressed in formal attire. An arch decorated with flowers is nearby.

Afterwards, for their couples portraits, Alex switched up her hairstyle and donned a different crown that mirrored the setting sun poking through the clouds perfectly. As if on cue, the sun began to turn the clouds these super vibrant colors, like they were on fire. The sky turned pink and the ridges of the mountains were perfectly lined with gold as they ran through the hills and the wind wrapped them up together. My jaw was on the floor the whole time (and my finger was ON that shutter button!).

A couple stands holding hands in a picturesque outdoor setting at sunset. The woman is in a white lace wedding dress, and the man is in a blue suit. They are surrounded by mountains and dramatic orange sky in the background.

Alex & Josh’s Reflections – In Their Own Words

“We are so beyond thrilled we chose Maddie Mae. She was a huge part of making our day perfect. She made us feel comfortable in front of the camera and caught moments that we didn’t even realize were happening until we saw them in film. Maddie found the perfect location, worked with the florist and coordinated the day, she is far more than just a photographer. Maddie’s passion for elopements and her authenticity is evident and exactly what we needed. We will never be able to thank Maddie enough, we will cherish these photos and our experience for a lifetime. So many people have said to us “you did it right” and we truly did. Our day was about us, what we wanted to say, how we wanted to feel and it was perfect.”

“Let us start with these photos made our wildest dreams come true. The decision to elope, though difficult at times, was absolutely the right one for us. The other great decision we made was choosing YOU to capture our love. The photos are UNREAL. We are so fortunate that the sun came out to play and the rain stopped just in time.”

If you ask me, the answer to a nervous system frie If you ask me, the answer to a nervous system fried from human life in 2025 is always going to be to get out in nature and breathe it all in.

This particular beach is in Kefalonia, a snippet from Kaitlynn & Chance’s elopement there a couple of years back. I took this as the sun was starting to go down and they were enjoying golden hour at the shore.

We were never meant to process this much on a daily basis. If you’re struggling, it makes sense. Get outside if you can, even if it’s just to root your feet to the Earth for a while.

Don’t forget that there are always resources if you need to talk to someone.

ENGAGED DOG LOVERS, THIS ONE IS FOR YOU. Every t ENGAGED DOG LOVERS, THIS ONE IS FOR YOU.

Every time I hear that folks want to include their pup in their wedding day (which I am ALL FOR by the way), I point them to Melissa & Jonathan’s Colorado elopement day.

While they initially made the choice to elope because they had been to big weddings in the past that the couples hosting hadn’t loved, they realized that they also had a huge perk… their beloved pup, Yoshi, could come with for the whole day!

They had a lakeside ceremony, playing rock paper scissors to see who would get to read their vows first. Their vow reading was super emotional, and I don’t think any of us made it out without getting teary.

Yoshi stood by in a tuxedo, looking his best, playing the important role as Best Man for the wedding. He would also later sign their marriage license with his paw print as their officiant, which you can do in Colorado!

After the ceremony, Yoshi had a snack of kibble while Melissa & Jonathan popped champagne and toasted to being just married 🥂

They settled in for a picnic in the same spot they got married in, spreading out a beautiful breakfast full of berries and charcuterie goods. Before they headed back to the car, Yoshi donned a new bandana proclaiming that his humans got married.

Melissa & Jonathan had rented a 4X4 for the day, so they drove their Jeep through mountain passes to see waterfalls, other alpine lakes, and aspen groves.

At some point it started to sprinkle, and Yoshi got an express air lift over muddy patches of the trail! But for the most part he hiked steadily right behind them, just happy to be included.

He even sat by for emotional support while Melissa & Jonathan read letters from their loved ones, stretched out on the blanket right beside them.

I wrote a blog post all about this beautiful day, which you can read! Just comment MELJON and I’ll send you the link!

We just passed these two’s 3rd wedding anniversary, so everyone wish them a happy anniversary in the comments!

Melissa & Jonathan, thank you so much for letting me document your day. I still think back on this one super fondly.

When I asked what scenery they wanted, they said, When I asked what scenery they wanted, they said, “Definitely GLACIERS”—and I think we nailed it.

Jennifer & Max had been to Alaska multiple times, so it was a perfect fit when it came time to plan a destination elopement.

These photos wound up snagging an award after the fact, and I’m still so proud of them. Glacial meltwater pools are one of my FAVORITE natural phenomena, and I’m always stoked to get to capture them!

If you want to see glaciers on your elopement day, I highly recommend planning for late July and tracking down a pool or two. They’ll be gone the next day, so no one will ever replicate your experience!

I’ve got a few slots left for next year—let me know if this is your dream day!

Imagine if instead of stressing about the fate of Imagine if instead of stressing about the fate of your wedding day and all the little details, you got to just relax into the moment & enjoy it instead?

The thing that eloping gets you in spades that you have to eke out on a big wedding day is *peace.* You get to do things your way, on your own timeline.

Any setting, any time of year. No traditions. Just the two of you and absolutely nothing you don’t want to do.

As someone who eloped myself and has photographed literally hundreds of elopements across dozens of countries, I’ve never spoken to a single couple who’s regretted it.

Elope and never wonder if you did the right thing. Choose yourself and never look back.

So many people accused these photos of being AI wh So many people accused these photos of being AI when I first posted them. 😂

As crazy as it was, I promise you they’re 100% real! I’m including even more BTS in this carousel of this insane shoot.

In our first conversation, Louisa & Kim told me they wanted 2 things: to get married at the solstice and to paddleboard among the icebergs.

The former they knew was possible. The latter they were less sure about.

To be honest *I* wasn’t even sure about it.

But this is one of the best parts of being an elopement photographer. Getting couples who come to you with their craziest, most out-of-the-box, wouldn’t-it-be-cool-if ideas and getting to see them come to life.

In fact, their vision was SO unique that it actually got featured on the Weather Channel recently! Which, I’ll be honest, I never thought I’d have an elopement highlighted there. 😂

I need to emphasize what a feat of athleticism this is. Kim is a dance teacher (they met during a class!) and Louisa hikes a ton, and they both are very experienced paddleboarders.

They eloped because they have a shared love of traveling and wanted to avoid wedding stress, and I can’t think of a cooler way to do it than this. It was really meaningful for them to get married ON the solstice at midnight to represent light in the darkness.

Since I’ve had a lot of people ask, and yes, safety was a huge concern here. I only wanted to do this if I knew it was 100% safe! Here’s a list of all the safety precautions they had in place:
• An experienced local Greenlandic guide who is an expert in THIS icefjord advising us
• A boat never more than 15 feet away from them
• In depth instruction on how to move around the ice and what to do if they got stuck
• LIGHTWEIGHT layers (Louisa’s dresses are both mesh) so that they could float
• Tons of experience in paddleboarding beforehand
• Great weather that was on their side for calm waters

I’m going to be dreaming about this elopement for a long time, and I’m still so happy & grateful that Louisa & Kim chose me for their wedding day.

No matter what your biggest dream is, tell me all about it. We can find a way!

xx Maddie Mae
I never thought I’d have an elopement featured on I never thought I’d have an elopement featured on the WEATHER CHANNEL, but here we are.

Honestly, I’m not over Louisa & Kim’s wedding day yet, and I don’t expect to be for a very, very long time. If ever.

I’ll share another post in the next few days with more details about these two and this insane adventure of theirs, but for now, here’s more footage from the paddleboarding part of their day.

If you’re engaged, I hope this is your sign to do something epic for your wedding day that you’ll hold onto for a lifetime. You deserve it.

I started taking couples into nature to say their I started taking couples into nature to say their vows and never👏🏻 looked 👏🏻 back👏🏻

The feeling of getting to give a couple nothing but joy and privacy on their wedding day after photographing so many big weddings that were the exact opposite was truly game changing for me.

To this day, I think eloping is a great choice for anybody. Whether you’re looking for:
Something less expensive than a traditional wedding
A reason not to invite relatives that you don’t want there
True and complete privacy for your vows
A wedding day that feels like the start of something epic
New traditions that mean something deep to you
A backdrop for your ceremony that you actually love
... or anything else! Eloping is the way to go.

Friends don’t let friends go through with expensive weddings they don’t love. ELOPE.

I’m never gonna steer you wrong. I’ve trekked all I’m never gonna steer you wrong.

I’ve trekked all over the globe. I’ve been to 42
countries (and counting!) and have traveled to all 7 continents. I’ve sandboarded in the Sahara and floated next to glacial ice in Greenland. So when I say I know adventure, I KNOW adventure!

And I’ve helped over 300 couples have epic wedding days all over the world. So no matter where you want to say your vows, I’m going to know exactly how to make it into the experience of a lifetime.

Where are we heading?!
