How to Plan a Stunning San Sophia Overlook Wedding

While the Telluride Ski Resort offers a variety of venues for weddings, San Sophia Overlook is one of the most breathtaking. At an elevation of 10,540 ft., this spot features 360 degree panoramic views of the San Juan Mountains and a simple, yet beautiful, wooden deck, perfectly placed on the edge of a ridge. With the city of Telluride sprawling below, you’ll feel like you’re getting married at the top of the world!

As a local Colorado elopement photographer, I’ve photographed tons of weddings at San Sophia Overlook and the views leave me speechless every time. This place is truly special and I can’t wait to share my top tips with you on how to plan the San Sophia Overlook wedding of your dreams!

How do you get married at San Sophia Overlook?

Open pretty much year-round (except April, May, and November), San Sophia Overlook offers unparalleled views of the rugged Colorado landscape and, thanks to Telluride’s free gondola which takes you straight to the venue, it’s incredibly accessible!

A San Sophia Overlook wedding is the perfect blend of timeless romance and epic adventure, so here’s everything you need to know to make it happen:

  1. Finalize Your Guest Count & Pick a Date

Before you do anything else, you’ll need to figure out how many people you want attending the ceremony. San Sophia Overlook can accommodate seating for up to 250 guests, so make sure you’ve finalized that guest list before booking.

As for picking your date, the site is available June-October (Summer Season) and December-March (Winter Season), which means you’ll have a lot of options throughout the year!
  2. Book the Venue

The venue is managed by the Telluride Ski Resort, so all bookings and coordination goes through them. There are two time slots available per day: the midday slot (12-3 p.m.) and the evening slot (3:30-6 p.m.). Since these are the only options, spots can get snatched up pretty quickly, so I strongly recommend booking at least a year out. The venue is managed by the Telluride Ski Resort, which means all bookings and coordination goes through them.

If you book Thursdays-Sundays, you will be required to book one of their reception venues separately as well, so just keep that in mind when selecting your date, since it does add to the cost (I go into more detail on that below). Luckily, you have plenty of places to choose from, including Allred’s Restaurant, which has a more rustic, mountain vibe and is located near the San Sophia gondola station at the top of the mountain, or the more casual Tomboy Tavern, which features an outdoor slope-side patio with stunning panoramas.

When you’re ready to make your booking, you can either call the Weddings & Events team at (970) 728-7447 or email them at weddings@telski.com

Pro Tip: Each venue has its own guest caps, so be sure to cross-reference those with your finalized guest list to make sure you’re not inviting more people to the ceremony than the reception venue can hold (Telluride Ski Resort outlines all of its venues and their restrictions on their official website here!).
  3. Hire a Photographer & Plan the Day

Hiring a local photographer (like me) means I can help you figure out the best timeline for your day to make sure you not only have the perfect wedding, but also the most beautiful pictures to remember it by! I know where all the best hidden spots are, when the lighting is perfect, and how to navigate the process of getting married at San Sophia Overlook, so you have the smoothest possible experience.

Pro Tip: If you want to take advantage of that stunning golden hour lighting, then keep that in mind while choosing your ceremony time slot. If you go for the evening window, then you’ll be exchanging your vows in the fading glow of the sunset—a breathtaking backdrop for the perfect photos!
  4. Get Your License

For San Sophia Overlook, the best option would be to get your marriage license from the San Miguel County Clerk. To apply for the license, you’ll need to go in person (the office is open Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.) and pay the $30 fee—make sure you bring cash or a check, since they don’t accept credit cards.

Both parties need to be present to sign the application, but other than that you’re all set! Since Colorado is a self-solemnizing state, you won’t need any witnesses or officiants—just be sure to sign the license within 35 days of the date it’s issued, then return it within 63 days of your wedding.
  5. Get Married!

That’s it! All that’s left is to exchange your vows against the gorgeous backdrop of the Colorado mountains and soak in every magical second.

When’s the best time to visit San Sophia Overlook?

The best time to visit San Sophia Overlook is June-October. The weather is milder, the wildflowers are in full bloom, and the crisp air is laced with the incredible smell of spruce trees. The Overlook is also more accessible during the warmer months, since you won’t have to take a snowcat from the gondola to the venue, allowing you more freedom to explore the area and take your time appreciating the rugged scenery all around you.

For smaller crowds, weekdays are better, especially during Summer months. Visiting later in the day will also get you less foot traffic and the best lighting. As the sun descends behind the San Juan Mountains, it bathes the valley before you in a golden glow that is beyond stunning and provides the perfect backdrop for your wedding!

San Sophia Overlook is the perfect spot for a Summer wedding, especially if you’re looking for majestic mountains dotted with vibrant wildflowers and views that stretch endlessly in every direction. Summer months also bring later sunsets that create spectacular backdrops for evening ceremonies!

San Sophia Overlook Winter Wedding

If you want a Winter wedding surrounded by snow-capped mountains and frost-covered trees, then San Sophia Overlook is the perfect place for it! The sweeping views and pristine alpine backdrop create an intimate setting that will make your day feel truly magical.

How do you get to San Sophia Overlook?

San Sophia Overlook is near the top of Lift 7. Fortunately, the Telluride Ski Resort offers a free gondola service that takes you from the Telluride Station in town, straight up to the Overlook! The ride takes about 10 minutes and offers epic views of the valley sprawling below you—I suggest bringing a jacket if you’re visiting during the winter months since the gondolas aren’t heated. You can even bring your dog if you would like! Our furry friends are allowed on the odd numbered gondolas, which are conveniently marked with a paw print on the side.

Once you get off at San Sophia Station, you’ll find a nature path made of gravel and dirt connecting you to the Overlook (there are also bathrooms located at this station, so I highly recommend using them before heading out!). It’s a short, 5-minute walk to the site and gives you the opportunity to take in the gorgeous scenery around you before reaching the amphitheater where the ceremony will take place. If you’re visiting during the Winter Season, then there will be a snowcat at the San Sophia Station waiting to take you to the Overlook, so you’re not trudging through the snow.

Pro Tip: If you’re driving in, there is free parking at the Carhenge Parking Lot, which is only a 10-minute walk from the Telluride gondola station!

How much does it cost to get married at San Sophia Overlook?

To start, you’ll need a marriage license from a local clerk which will be $30. As for the venue, the rental fee for San Sophia Overlook typically starts at $5,000 with the only requirement being that you have a wedding planner/coordinator. This cost includes access to the site for the ceremony, chairs and a water station, a day-of coordinator, site set-up and clean-up, the podium and deck for the ceremony itself. As mentioned above, you’ll be required to buy out one of the Resort’s reception spaces as well if your date falls during the Thursday-Sunday period. Cost will vary depending on what you choose, but you can contact the Telluride Ski Resort Events team for a direct quote and availability.

The team can also provide you with a list of vendors to choose from and you can have any decor you’d like, as long as it’s approved by the venue. Beyond that, you can manage your wedding budget however you want! Most couples who hire me prioritize the experience of having an adventure in a stunning location, which is why they invest a lot of their budget in photography to capture it all. You can find my full cost of eloping guide here!

Are dogs allowed at San Sophia Overlook?

Yes, dogs are allowed at San Sophia Overlook. Just make sure they’re leashed and you take them on the odd-numbered gondolas marked with paw prints on the side—since those are the designated pet gondolas—and you should be good to go!

Sarah & Marcus’s San Sophia Overlook Summer Wedding

Sarah & Marcus wanted an intimate wedding location that felt super special but left behind the parts of a traditional wedding that they weren’t interested in. They wanted a classic & minimalist vibe with great views and only the people they wanted to be there. They also wanted the chance to get married somewhere where they could go on a great sunrise hike before the ceremony! They got ready on the mountain and did their first look in the San Juan peaks. Sarah & Marcus had a private vow reading up there by a lake, starting their wedding day with a moment to connect by themselves. They explored by themselves for a while more (including a scenic gondola ride) and then headed to San Sophia Overlook for their ceremony with friends & family. The ridges they were just exploring were on full display behind them from the overlook and made for the best backdrop while they exchanged rings and signed their marriage license! Afterwards they gathered with their guests at a local restaurant with dinner, cake, and a toast.
