Your Guide to Planning an Epic Waimea Canyon Elopement

Known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” Waimea Canyon State Park has more than earned the nickname. With an elevation of about 3,500 feet, this spot is one of the most popular locations on the island of Kauai and definitely one of the most beautiful. From its countless hiking trails to the cascading waterfalls flowing by its vibrant cliffs, Waimea Canyon is the perfect blend of intimacy and epic, jaw-dropping natural views. 

While you can’t officially exchange your vows at the park, it is still one of my favorite spots to recommend couples go exploring for fun, especially for elopement photos. Every one of my visits to Waimea Canyon has been an unforgettable adventure and I can’t wait to share my top tips for planning your own.

How do you elope at Waimea Canyon? 

After over a decade of elopement photography, Waimea Canyon State Park has never failed to impress, thanks to its effortless combination of natural beauty and untamed wilderness. Here is a general overview of what you need to know in order to make your Waimea Canyon elopement & photos as gorgeous as the setting itself:

1. Pick a Ceremony Location

Due to the sacred nature of the Waimea Canyon land to indigenous Hawaiians, the state doesn’t offer permits for ceremonies in the park. Which means you’ll need to decide where else you would like to exchange your vows before you go (respectfully) exploring. There are plenty of nearby options that I can help you get permits for—then you can head over to Waimea Canyon for photos after.

2. Finalize Your Guest Count

Your guest count is ultimately going to depend on where you choose to have your ceremony. For example, if you choose to exchange your vows on any of the public beaches around the island, your guest limit can be as high as 30 people depending on the spot, with that number including you, your officiant, photographer, guests, and any other vendors or performers you wish to include in the festivities. 

3. Obtain Your Permit & Marriage License

Since you can’t have your ceremony at Waimea Canyon, you’ll need to look elsewhere for a place to exchange your vows. Luckily, there is no shortage of beautiful spots around the island and I’m happy to help you find the perfect one as well as navigate the process of getting any permits for it!

No matter where you choose to have your ceremony, though, you’ll still need a Hawaiian marriage license, which you can apply for through Hawaii’s Department of Health’s official website here. You’ll need to pay the $65 fee online once you submit the application and then present it to a license agent in person—they’ll issue you the official license which will be valid for 30 days. The Department of Health website has a list of agents that you can meet with—just be sure to look under the “Kauai” section for the agents’ contact information. If you have other general questions or want more information about the agents, you can call the following number for Kauai-specific inquiries: (808) 241-3498. 

Hawaii also requires you to have a state-approved “Performer” to officiate the ceremony. There are some options listed on the Department of Health’s website here, but if you have someone in mind you’d really like to officiate, it is actually possible for them to become a state-approved Performer! All they have to do is register through Hawaii’s Department of Health (I’ve linked the specific webpage here) and pay the $35 fee for a 60-day license.

4. Plan the Day & Pick Your Photo Locations

Spanning almost 14 miles, Waimea Canyon covers a large amount of land, which means you have an endless amount of options to choose from when it comes to the perfect spot for your elopement photos. As an elopement photographer with experience shooting in the area, I can not only guide you to the best places with the most beautiful lighting, but also help plan a day that is filled with adventure, while giving you a completely stress-free experience!

5. Get Married!

All that’s left is to say your vows and then head over to Waimea Canyon to take the most beautiful photos in front of the most incredible views to celebrate!

When’s the best time to visit Waimea Canyon? 

The best time to visit Waimea Canyon State Park is during the dry season which usually lasts from April to October. Given the canyon’s higher elevation, temperatures tend to be cooler in the park than along the coastline, making conditions during the summer and shoulder seasons ideal for couples who want to explore the many trails and overlooks offered without the risks of excessive heat or flooding. Due to its popularity, Waimea Canyon can get pretty crowded, so I suggest visiting in April/May or September/October rather than during peak season to avoid the heavy foot traffic—visiting on a weekday instead of a weekend can also help maximize your chances of getting the canyon relatively to yourself!

As for the best time of day for a visit, the earlier the better. Not only will you find fewer visitors and more parking, but also the best lighting for your elopement photos. Free of the clouds that tend to roll in later in the day, the morning sky blooms with color in the dawning light as the rising sun illuminates the canyon walls, creating a stunning backdrop for your portraits!

With fewer visitors, mild weather conditions, and gorgeous, soft lighting illuminating the vibrant landscape, this spot is as peaceful as it is scenic, offering a stunning backdrop for your elopement photos! 

Waimea Canyon State Park Winter Elopement

If you want sweeping mountain views accompanied by the sounds of rushing waterfalls, then Waimea Canyon State Park is perfect for you! Courtesy of the powerful rains that this area is known for, the typically rugged terrain becomes even more beautifully untamed during the winter season, blooming with lush greenery interrupted only by the flowing rivers and falls. With fewer crowds overwhelming the park, a winter elopement at Waimea Canyon will feel like the intimate adventure you always wanted.

How do you get to Waimea Canyon?

Waimea Canyon State Park is about an hour’s drive west from the Lihue Airport in Kauai. You’ll take HI-50 W (also called Kaumualli Hwy on some common navigation apps) for about 24 miles until you hit the town of Waimea, then turn right onto State Hwy 550/Waimea Canyon Dr. You’ll reach the main Waimea Canyon Lookout parking lot—located at 22°04’17.0″N 159°39’44.2″W—about 10.5 miles down the road, but there are plenty of other lookouts and trailheads along the way if you want to stop and explore different parts of the canyon!

From the Waimea Canyon Lookout parking lot, it’s only about a 0.1 mile walk to the lookout itself, so super accessible and a great place to find epic panoramic views of the canyon. And if you want to do more than soak in the views, there are tons of trails within a 5 minute drive of the lookout that take you deeper into the canyon. They range from easier treks like the Iliau Nature Loop Trail to more challenging hikes like the Kukui Trail, so how you want to experience the canyon’s beauty is completely up to you!  

Pro Tip: A helicopter tour is actually a great way to see everything Waimea Canyon has to offer! The aerial views are unparalleled and allow you to really take in everything that makes this canyon truly stunning.

How much does it cost to elope at Waimea Canyon? 

While you can’t technically exchange your vows in Waimea Canyon, it’s still a great spot for some epic elopement photos and there are plenty of other nearby ceremony options that are either free or super budget-friendly! Assuming you pick one of the free options, the only costs you’ll need to consider are the entrance fee for the Waimea Canyon State Park (free for residents and $5 for non-residents), the parking tickets which you can purchase at any of the parking lots (free for residents and $10 per vehicle for non-residents), the marriage license ($65), and the filming permit for photos ($100 plus a $25 vehicle fee). So, if you’re covering the entrance fee for yourselves and don’t live in Hawaii, then you’re looking at a total cost of about $210!

Beyond that, your total elopement budget can be whatever you want it to be! It usually depends on your guest count, travel costs, vendors, etc. (I have tons of recommendations for nearby accommodations, caterers, and anything else you may need!). Most of the couples who hire me prioritize having an adventure in a stunning location like Waimea Canyon and capturing every memorable moment of it, which is why they spend a lot of their budget on photography.
